My feeling is that since the Komodo evolved in Oz and attained it's modern body size some 3.5 million years ago (and is unchanged since then), it might not actually reflect a case of island dwarfism, despite being smaller in body size than Megalania. There is also significant temporal overlap of Komodos and the even bigger Megalania (as well as a presently undescribed species of intermediate body size) in Australia for several hundred thousands of years, and the dating evidence shows that Komodos were still Down Under until relatively recent (geologically speaking, of course).

Anyway, this is a great write-up, Tristan, I really enjoyed reading it :)Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14962407936608207040noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7897751509059623525.post-77338099666141908982015-09-26T06:23:20.458-07:002015-09-26T06:23:20.458-07:00Thanks for your reply. I do believe I mentioned the presence of V. komodoensis on mainland Australia however, as I wrote " Fossil evidence shows that the ancestors of the Komodo dragon actually evolved on mainland Australia, only recently spreading to Indonesia. While the Australian dragons are extinct, the great size difference between mainland giants such as Megalania and the Komodo dragon show that it may in fact have been an island dwarf. "

Also, many thanks for the link to the paper, I will take my time and read it.Tristanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13451580709894555958noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7897751509059623525.post-19791292152950897762015-09-25T16:35:14.375-07:002015-09-25T16:35:14.375-07:00Australia was also home to Komodo Dragons back in ...Australia was also home to Komodo Dragons back in the day! They evolved there, some 3.5 million years ago, surviving into the Pleistocene- the time of the 'Ice Ages'. A new study just out has conclusively demonstrated that the earliest humans and giant monitor lizards overlapped in time- you can download the original research article here: http://authors.elsevier.com/a/1RaHl-4PRehV9 (Free download until the 11th of October, then it'll go behind a paywall).
